About food and best dishes
There are many restaurants of all kinds and types in Siem Reap. They are (nearly) all concentrated in the city centre, in and around the famous PUB STREET (there must be hundreds of them!). They serve Khmer, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Indian or Mexican dishes but you will also find a good European restaurant serving traditional Irish steak and Guinness – yes, there is Molly Malone´s Irish Pub. The steak and beer are of the best quality (bit more expensive than local dishes).
But you are in Cambodia - let´s taste Khmer cuisine then! It is less spicy in comparison to Thai, there is more vegetable in it (and less meat) but in general it is very tasty. Chicken meat predominates, beef is not so frequent and also fish, snails, shrimps, squids - simply everything sea can offer and you can eat. Cambodia is famous for its fantastic spices. Cambodian pepper (white, green, black, red) is exported to the whole world, even to such gourmet countries like France, then several kinds of curry, chilly, lemon grass, saffron (200g for 1USD!), coriander, cinnamon, anise and above all delicious amok, local mix of spices.
We can recommend Mexican restaurant Viva (address: Mondol 1), it is on the corner just opposite to Old Market and Warehouse restaurant. They serve both Mexican dishes and specialty dishes of Khmer cuisine as Lok Lak (sliced marinated beef with garlic and green pepper served with rice or French bread (sure, you can have French fries, too).
And, they always have good and cold draught beer! (USD 0,75 per big glass). If you prefer cocktails, we wish to recommend Shadow of Angkor Restaurant (353 Pokambor Ave.), about 300 m from Old Market. Wide choice, right drink size and adequate alcohol and ingredients content. One cocktail is USD 3. If you buy two, you will get one free (or you can buy 4 and drink 6 ). Our favourites are Singapore Sling and their specialty Shadow of Angkor.
I suppose you like dim sum (Chinese meat or vegetable dumplings) or spring rolls – then you should definitely visit a small family restaurant Moloppor Café about 100m from Bopha Angkor Hotel (address: 512 Achar svar street) near the river. Do not be mistaken, apart from coffee they serve delicious dishes at very good prices. Try their Chinese dumplings and deep fried chicken pieces in batter (6 pieces for 2,50 USD). Do not order spaghetti or any pasta. You will get a funny serving and simply it is not just right. Otherwise, they are masters in Asian cuisine.
You can also cook it yourself. The restaurant Le Tigre de Papier cooking classes organized by Khmer recipes. You will know the local market where you can buy ingredients to cook with the chef's delicious exotic food and at the end you still enjoy. It's fun!
General rule is: go to popular restaurants full of people. Most restaurants accept credit cards, tips are not obligatory. Prices on restaurant menus are valid. Waiters have never tried to rip us off, they are obliging and smiling.
So enjoy your meal and drink and keep unforgettable culinary memories!
