About shopping in Siem Reap
First of all, forget that shopping at markets is cheaper. It might be quite on the contrary. General rule is to divide the price by two and then you can start to negotiate. In the worst-case scenario you can play a little comedy of lamenting and leaving.
There are several big markets right in the centre of Siem Reap: Central Market, Old Market, Angkor Night Market and many other smaller markets. Goods are very similar at all markets, only quality and prices may vary. We recommend to shop at ART CENTRE. It is very close to the Old Market, just across the Siem Reap River. ART CENTRE is a complex of many shops, stands, bars and restaurants – but there is one thing about it – it is clean and very well organized place.
Goods in ART CENTRE have quite good quality; do not even worry to buy gems like Cambodian rubies and sapphires here.
What to buy in Siem Reap? We definitely recommend pure silk, cashmere scarfs.
Mostly very good quality and quite cheap. There are loads of souvenirs, pictures, various objects made of wood, stone or leather, bracelets, textile and (crocodile) leather bags and handbags, beautiful colour lacquered boxes, colourful fabrics and all kinds of silver products.
This type of goods you can also buy in regular shops elsewhere in town too, but market shopping is market shopping. We do not recommend buying watches or mobile phones on markets despite of fantastic low prices. They may get broken before you come back from your holiday.
What presents to take home from Cambodia? Spices, yes, spices. The offer is tempting, so many colours, aromas and flavours. And the benefit? You will please your relatives and maybe enjoy it in some delicious meal. And do not forget to buy chocolate-taste coffee from the Cambodian province of Ratanakiri.
So, nice shopping and do not “shop till you drop”.
