Siem Reap is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia. Today, its serves as a gateway to famous Angkor Temple Region, medieval town built in 9th – 13th century by emperors of Khmer Imperium - the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the seven Wonders of the World. Thanks to those attractions, Siem Reap has transformed itself into a major tourist hub with more than 2 millions visitors every year.
Siem Reap nowadays is a vibrant town with modern hotels and architecture.The main town with its nightlife is concentrated around Psar Chas area (Old Market area), Art Center Market, Angkor Night Market and Pub Street.This area is full of guesthouses, magnificent hotels, galleries, pubs, restaurants, jewellery and handicraft shops.
Apart from Angkor Temples (Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom), the town itself and its surroundings has a lot to offer. The National Museum, Angkor Cultural Village, an infinite number of pagodas and many other attractions in the town or you can go to one of many trips: to Kulen Mountain National Park with famous Big Buddha statue at Preah Ang Thom or Floating village (houses, schools, clinics and even churches are built on barge like bases); cycling tours: to West Baray and Silk Farm (natural water reservoir sized 16 km2 and a working factory farm producing some of the finest silk in the country) or quad-bike or balloon trips, if you prefer more adrenaline experience.
To Siem Reap you can easily get from Bangkok either by air or by bus. There is a newly built motorway between Bangkok and Siem Reap (border crossing in Poi Pet). From Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville (regular flights start from July 2013) you can either fly or take VIP bus (320 km and approximately 5 hours).
